Exploring Historic Salem

Tuesday-Wednesday, July 13-14, 2021

Course Number HI402 or HI502 2 Credits $250

In this exciting class we will explore Downtown Salem’s historic, cultural, and natural areas. We will visit numerous sites including the Oregon Capitol State Park, Willamette Heritage Center (aka Mission Mill Museum), Bush’s Pasture Park, and more.

Most importantly, we will discuss ways to bring the study of nature, art, and local history to our students through meaningful classroom lessons and field trips. Our adventures will provide ideas that will energize history, science, math and art activities across the curriculum in K-12 classrooms.

NOTE: We will walk about 2-3 miles during the day, so it will be important to arrive in relatively good physical shape. Our pace will be leisurely, and will focus on exploration, discovery and discussion.

Beyond the Capitol

Tuesday-Wednesday, July 20-21, 2021

Course Number HI405T or HI505T 2 Credits $250

In this class you we will venture 'beyond the capitol' and downtown to several areas surrounding the Salem area. We will study local history, art, culture, and parklands. Along the way we'll stop to discuss how visits to these areas with students (or visits to similar areas) might prove valuable in teaching students across the curriculum.

On both days of the class, we will be near restaurants at lunchtime. On day 1, we will be in the Salem area, and on day 2 we will be out in the Monmouth area. The goal is that you will gain ideas in this class that can apply to students.

NOTE: We will walk about 2-3 miles during the day, so it will be important to arrive in relatively good physical shape. Our pace will be leisurely, and will focus on exploration, discovery and discussion.
